Before Five

A Black Minorca rooster with smooth glossy black plumage, a large upright red single comb and a long red wattle, in a burgundy wool dressing gown with a loosely tied cord, cut to fit a bird, standing on scaled dark grey rooster legs on a scrubbed pine kitchen table, an old cream rotary telephone with its handset in the cradle and a coiled cord, a white enamel pot and a steaming white cup of tea on a saucer, a brass desk lamp giving warm light, a sash window behind showing the deep blue sky before dawn
