Natural History, the Annex

On File

A Silver Spangled Hamburg rooster in a brown tweed jacket with leather elbow patches and burgundy cravat, standing at an oak desk examining a specimen drawer in a dimly lit natural history museum archive, rows of wooden specimen cabinets with brass labels behind him, a green-shaded banker's lamp casting warm amber light, a glass case of pinned butterflies in the foreground

Every drawer had a label and every label had a date and not one of the dates belonged to him, which he found comforting. The work of preservation requires a certain faith in whoever comes next.
