Midsummer Eve, Quarter to Ten

Overstaying

A Buff Orpington rooster with golden-amber plumage in a rumpled oatmeal linen blazer over a white collarless shirt, walking along a pale gravel path in a formal English garden at golden hour, lavender borders and clipped boxwood hedges in soft bokeh, luminous pale gold sky fading to blue, long shadow stretching behind him on the gravel

The light had overstayed by any reasonable measure, and still no one asked it to leave. He had always preferred guests who didn't know when to go — it meant neither of them had anywhere better to be.
