Rentrée

A Lakenvelder rooster with a white body, a black hackle and a black tail, seated upright on a green velvet bench by the window of an old wood-panelled train compartment, in a rust-coloured corduroy jacket over a pale blue shirt, a straw boater on the brass luggage rack above him, late-afternoon sun on dry golden fields and a strip of blue sea in the window

Facing the Way He Came

Half the country is travelling home this week, and he has a seat facing backwards, which suits him: the sea stays in the window a little longer. His straw hat rides in the luggage rack. It will not come down again until June.
