Sunday's Emerald

The Fitting

A Rhode Island Red rooster in an emerald green blazer stands before a gilt-framed mirror in a mahogany-paneled fitting room, silver tailor's shears with black ribbon hovering near the shoulder, warm amber lighting, oak parquet floor.

They told him the jacket had only ever been cut in one size. He stood in the fitting room anyway, watching the shears work, understanding finally that tradition is not inherited — it is altered, stitch by stitch, until it sits on shoulders it was never designed for.
