What Falls Without Landing

The Vigil

A Silver Spangled Hamburg rooster in a charcoal turtleneck and olive field jacket standing on a wooden observation deck at night, amber lantern glowing behind him, faint meteor streaks crossing the starry sky above pine trees

He had driven two hours to stand on a deck he could have stood on anywhere, but the point was never the view — it was the decision to wait for something that owed him nothing. The sky performed on its own schedule. He simply chose to be present for the commute.
