Nine Mornings

A Buff Plymouth Rock rooster with smooth even golden-buff plumage and a red single comb, in a deep indigo wool ranch jacket with a cream sheepskin collar and a turquoise wool scarf, seated upright like a gentleman in a faded green canvas folding chair on a dusty high-desert field at dawn, folded buff wing feathers resting on his knees and scaled yellow rooster legs with talons planted in the dirt, a steel flask and cup on a small folding table beside him, a roadrunner standing on the ground nearby, dozens of plain brightly coloured hot-air balloons rising into a pink and pale blue sky above a long blue mountain ridge

A Roadrunner, Likewise Grounded

For nine mornings he has driven out before first light to watch other people go up, and this is the last of them. He has no wish to join them; the sky, in his view, is best taken from a folding chair with the flask within reach. The roadrunner, who shares his position on flight, turned up at six and has kept him company since.
