Salt, Not Sugar

A Buckeye rooster with smooth deep mahogany-red plumage, a small red single comb and a glossy dark green tail, in a dark green ribbed wool gansey cut to fit a bird, standing on scaled yellow rooster legs on a worn grey flagstone hearth beside an old black cast-iron range in a whitewashed Highland cottage kitchen, a lidded black iron pot on the range with steam escaping, a plain wooden stirring stick resting across a white saucer, a cloth bag of oats tied with string and an open wooden salt box on a stone ledge, a small misted-over window above in cool early-morning light

Stirred One Way Since Seven

Oats, water and a pinch of salt, which is the whole recipe and most of the argument. The pot has been going since seven; he takes his turn at it clockwise, with the stick that came with the cottage, and the window above the range has long since gone white with steam.
