Whitmore is black from comb to toe, down to the skin, and has been described as the only model whose wardrobe cannot clash with him. He dresses for every sitting as though it were a dinner, on the principle that one may always remove a cravat but can never produce one at short notice.
His first appearance in the dispatches was entirely off camera, which he considers characteristic of photographers. He has yet to be photographed in light he considered adequate, and says so, kindly, every time. The pictures are invariably very good.
